Presenting CAN’s 2016 Legislator of the Year – Representative Debbie Mayfield

We are pleased to announce that CAN named Representative Debbie Mayfield the 2016 CAN Legislator of the Year. This award is presented annually by CAN to a legislator who has exhibited outstanding public service and support of the Community Advocacy Network by promoting positive legislation and protecting the interests of the 9 Million Floridians living in community associations. Representative Mayfield is a true champion in providing leadership on issues affecting anyone in the community association industry. Although CAN is a non-partisan organization that does not endorse a particular candidate or political party, we always support community leaders and legislators who share our passion of advocating on behalf of the Florida residents who own or live in shared communities.

Representative Debbie Mayfield and Alan Garfinkel, Esq., CAN Chairman

Representative Mayfield is a member of the Florida House of Representatives and currently represents Florida’s 54th District, which includes Indian River County and Northern St. Lucie. She is also the Chair of the Business and Regulation Subcommittee for the House of Representatives. During this past legislative session, she opposed several harmful bills that would have severely impacted those living in community associations such as HB 203, the Estoppel Bill. “After serving on the Board of my own Homeowners Association, I saw firsthand how legislation can impact citizens,” said Debbie Mayfield. “CAN has kept me informed and made me aware of legislation that concerns these community members.” She went on to say, “CAN seems to have a favorable impact on our Senators and Representatives when it comes to community issues. They also appear to be ahead of the curve when it comes to legislation which can help our Senators and Representatives make intelligent decisions.”

CAN continues to advise legislators about the challenges facing all types of shared ownership communities through its alerts, legislative receptions, and friendships with community association leaders such as Representative Mayfield and Roger Kesselbach, President of the Space Coast Community Association (SCCA). A special thanks to Roger for joining us as we presented the award to Representative Mayfield. And thank you to all of the leaders and advocates who fight on behalf of community associations statewide. You are all champions in your own right.

Yours in Community,
