I attended a legislative press conference yesterday in Delray Beach which was sponsored by Senator Ted Deutch and Representative Kelly Skidmore. The purpose of that press conference was to ask the Governor to convene a special Task Force to investigate ways to provide community association members with the legislative and financial assistance they unfortunately did not receive during the 2009 Session. The turnout at yesterday's event was fantastic as leaders from large community association umbrella organizations (such as the Broward Coalition, the Alliance of Delray and COWBRA) expressed the eerily similar stories plaguing their communities. Senator Jeremy Ring, Senator Deutch, Representative Skidmore and Miami Beach Commissioner Jerry Libbin all discussed their frustration over the inability to pass any lender reforms this session. CAN worked with each of these legislators and many more to pass legislation to ease the suffering in many communities. Unfortunately, the bankers' lobby was just too strong of an opponent and other reforms were sunk as a result of political wrangling. These proactive legislators are now calling on the Governor to convene a special Task Force which will be comprised of community association leaders, bankers and legislators. We will be discussing these issues over the coming months and I know many of you with whom I regularly speak would be a natural fit for this Task Force. CAN is committed to working with Senator Ring, Senator Deutch, Representative Skidmore, Commissioner Libbin and all other interested legislators to make this Task Force a reality and to ensure that next year's session results in meaningful reform. I will also be appearing on the Topical Currents show on WLRN 91.3 AM Radio on Wednesday, June 24th at 1:00 p.m. I will be appearing along with Rep. Julio Robaina to discuss association foreclosures.
